From WiiLi
[edit] Tuxido
(This is work in progress, you guys know English is not my first language so I´ll appreciate your help on giving sense to my words).
I´m Tuxido, I started wiili.org as a small school project(sounds familiar?). The idea, to port Linux into the Nintendo Wii.
I started the site with a wiki and the forums. When people found out about Wiili.org they started contributing to the WiKi with information. Specially on the Wiimote. One of this persons was CarlKenner, that even without actually having a wiimote at hand was able to update one of his programs (GloviPie) to use the wiimote.
This generated a massive amount of traffic to the website and many other people started to contribute to the wiki and forums. An so wiili.org became from a simple school project into the community it is today.
The massive amount of traffic generated made our original host (Dreamhost) kick us of their server. For that time I already started to ask for donations and was able to put together over 600 dollars to get an maintain a new server.
The transition to the new server took over 3 days, I was very busy at school, the dreamhost people would no´t get the site back online, and the dedicated server company needed some time to get the new server going.
When the server was finally online and after waiting all night for an email with the server information I started to work on moving things.
To my surprise by that time there was a rumor that even made a frontpage on Digg that I had run away with the donations! Many people that were part of this rumor later apologized.
At this point I was shock by the passion that people were putting on the WiiLi idea.
(Mention the most important initial contributors, WMD, Darwiinmote, ...)
It´s been less than 2 months since I registered the domain. The WiKi now hosts over 10 active translations. There´s an important Linux distribution willing to support our work. And the site gets more and more traffic everyday.
This website belong to it´s members. I take no credit at all for the work done so far.
I been so busy with school and keeping up with the site, that very little of my time have gone into the development. I really wish I could focus more time on my hobby and not so much on dealing with the website itself.
I need to apologize for the advertising on the website, I will try to optimize them to be as less intrusive as possible while generating a cash flow. I won´t be starting a new donate thing on this site (and controversy around it), and so the money I get from the adds will pay the server.
A SVN repository is installed on the server. We are working with a well know Linux distro for this part of the project. And their support it´s crucial to achieve all of our goals. They are willing to dedicate some time of their Engineers to help us achieve all our goals.
First steps:
Get WiiLi running on a regular PC. This project are the bases of WiiLi and I like to call it "WiiLi Link". It will make the initial development easier and faster. Many things are possible with WiiLi but the best way to think about it, is as a living room media center with wiimote support.
We will have WiiLi in million of living rooms around the world, bringing IPTV (youtube) and IPTV p2p (think "The Venice Project"). Tivo like functionality, flash and home brew game access with wiimote support, and so many requested features. All from your living room into your TV and for free. How much will Apple upcoming iTV cost and what will it be able to do?
In the future all this will be possible by using a Nintendo Wii and booting WiiLi into it. If you can´t wait until we boot WiiLi into a Nintendo Wii or you you will be able to do it sooner by hooking up a regular PC to your TV.
If you want to help us..
