[edit] Wording:

Changes need to be made to some of the wording in the petition. There are too many sentences that feel lengthy and bloated. I tried to iron some of it out, but finding the right wording is hard.

[edit] The Eranmane idea

Add:

And we would also like to note that your competitors (Sony Computer Entertainment and Microsoft) are paving the way for independently developed software, and one of them is doing so with Linux. We believe that by allowing Linux, you can retain your position as the leader in innovation. It will not cost you anything, as we will not place a system for pirating Wii games within the WiiLi project, neither will we distribute emulators for any console. Edit: Don't bother I've added that. And some info on the PSP development to back up my point.... Eranmane 14:44, 18 January 2007 (EST)

[edit] Dr.Saturn's edit:

I elaborated on the idea that this is a good thing for everyone and I think it's important to focus on the idea of community that drives open source. I made sure to point out the fact that we are not just hackers but Nintendo fans and customers (as we have to buy a Wii to work on this and will all be buying games).

This could be very big for Nintendo's push for independent developers if they have the foresight to see the potential in this. The big thing I think we need to worry about though, is that Nintendo is a game company and wants to focus on games. Linux is far removed from that vision and they are not likely to want to have anything to do with this. What we can do though, is offer to help eliminate their concerns relating to piracy. They would have an interest in making sure the safe(r) distro is the superior distro and if we can convince them that, it's in the bag.

Oh yeah - let's get this translated to Japanese after we finalize it. Then we can send one to NOA, one to NOE and one to NOJ. I can help with that when the time comes.

[edit] The Flower Corrollary

We should make a point to never endorse and do everything in our power to stop the use of Wii Linux for past Nintendo console emulators. This would take away from the virtual consol and its profits. As for other consoles, thats up in the air, maybe not, to appease Nintendo, a PS1 emulator would take away from the virtual console almost as much as an N64 one would. We need to take into consideration that Nintendo would probably not support this because it looses them money from the web browser and other passably downloads. We could offer have them distribute it on a pay for basis (something alowed in the GNU license), this way they don't loose money and we have a great way of distributing to the masses.

If Nintendo does not allow another browser to be available for the wii does that make it a monopoly?

[edit] Elaborate on sony's linux endorsements?

I was wondering if it is right to elaborate on Sony. They have linux already working on their Playstation 3. As such, it is an example of how having linux on a console doesn't really make all that difference in the world.

As for now, I find the petition a little bit too idealistic. People in bussiness like clear results, instead of dreamy visions. (unsigned comment)

Clear results? Now, I don't like PLAYSTATION 3 but the Linux idea is making progress with the PS3. The problem is that PS3 isn't selling well.

You want clear results? Fine. Take a look at the PlayStation Portable development work. The reverse engineering of the PSP has made room for everything. From user-created games to a media streaming solution. The PS3 development will catch on, and if Nintendo accept this, so will the Wii development. Eranmane 10:22, 29 December 2006 (EST)

[edit] Running Linux

Has anyone ever tried to find out if the Wii is already running a version of Linux? I wouldn't be at all surprised to find out it is.

I dont have broadband so cant use the Internet Channel but take a look at Ulteo.org . Its a Linux distro that runs within a web browser . It will most likely be usuable with the final version of The Internet Channel.Currently Ulteo is closed to new users for the Connected Desktop.Nitromaster 17:20, 6 January 2007 (EST) nitromaster

[edit] Suggestion

We should add that Nintendo may let people download and install edited "official" versions of WiiLi for Wii Points. Then they will make money of it, and that problem is solved.

By allowing them to do whatever they want with it they are more likly going to make it official and support it. And of course it will still be OpenSource allowing anyone to download and burn a live CD with WiiLi for Wii without paying for anything else than the internet connection and the CD - but without being able to install.

If you can choose to either download it for a few Wii Point, or download it to the computer and burn it to a live-CD - what do you think that the majority will do? And to ensure Nintendo that there“s no risk in supporting it you will not be able install it from a live-CD so that you will be forced to either buy or always use a live-CD.

What do you think? I can edit this later.

[edit] In Virtual Console

What if, instead of directing towards a Live CD, the petition was more focused towards brining it as a semi-VC title. Something that could be bought for 200 Wii Points, and would ask you to insert a SD card, into which all of the WiiLi data would be stored. Thereas, it would be a channel on Wii, and you would use an SD card for all of the Linux data of which it would read and use?

[edit] Wiili Chanel

This option should be mentioned too, because it could work like the opera web browser, a channel i think would be the best option, i think Wiili has more of a Channel feeling than a VC tittle. For pricing add a comment that gives them the right to do what ever they want, don't specify an amount of points (gpl), let Nintendo get to that conclusion by themselves.

When and where do we sign this? I have a few friends who would like to see this.
