A full description of this utility can be found in the README file.

  • Changelog

  • Added System Menu Region detection
  • Added intro screen/extra warnings

  • AnyRegion_Changer for Wii
    • This program will let you edit any and all of the region information on your Wii, and allow you to install System Menu 3.2 from any region if you so desire. The setting changes are the result of a setting change library I’ve been working on for a while called sysconf.c. The System Menu Installer uses patchmii as a simple base for web installations. It also uses some

IOS patches (by bushing/waninkoko) in the event that the system menu or IOS30 needs to be downgraded. The Setting changes have been tested again and again, and the worst you can do to your system is cause a semi-brick. The System Menu Installer is done in a way even safer than Waninkoko’s Downgrader, so there’s certainly no worries there.

Country Codes: A near-complete listing of country codes can be found at: http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Country_Codes

Precautions:

Please take note of the following: -If setting.txt is corrupted for any reason, it is entirely possible that your Wii will no longer boot. -Be careful not to change Video mode to a mode unsupported by your display. -If you change your Country code, you will be unable to receive any pending gifts you have in the Wii Shop Channel. (The shop will also warn you of this) -If you set the EULA to Read, you may be accessing Nintendo Network Services illegally. You should only change this setting to “read” if you have actually read and accepted the EULA for the Country code you have set.

  • libdi and the DVDX installer.
    • A very first full proof DVD player has been released for the Wii. It combines the functions of MplayerWii and is the first FULL media center for the Wii.
  • "As you all know, I’ve been working on libdi (or the DVD Access library) for a while now. We had some problems getting it out to release because of the difficulties we encountered while writing the second part of this topic. The DVDX installer instead will install a small, hidden, channel on your Wii that allows you to read DVDs on an unmodified system. It is not an installer for a patched IOS. You may however need one, depending on your system.

Usage of this package is fairly simple. Run the installer.dol found in the package, follow the onscreen instructions, and you’re done".

"Once you’ve done that, you can enjoy the splendor of mplayer. That what started out as a simple proof of concept has rapidly turned into a full-featured media player, under the nourishing hands of dhewg. The main aim of the mplayer project was to get DVDVideo going, but it also supports reading video files off the SD card". (Experimental).

"A patch for Wii64, the N64 emulator for the Wii, will also be available shortly. This patch will allow you to read games off a DVD".

Marcan and Bushing of Team Twiizers have released MenuLoader v0.4 which essentially does the same thing as Crediar's HackInstaller, but doesn't change anything in the NAND flash. This means you must run this DOL each time you wish to use the features.

Features

  • Debug by USBGecko
  • RegionFree for Channels
  • RegionFree for discs
  • Remove the screen heatlhsafety (which appears at the launch of the Wii)
  • No music on screen
  • Installation on any version of System Menu

  • Bushing and Co. releases Open-Source Apploader, ISO template

- This application allows the user to run homebrew from a dvd disks. No this is not a softmod, this program only works on hardmodded wiis. This app also requires Gecko region free 3.2 or higher and Trucha Signer. The app is in ISO format, unfortunately, apparently both WiiScrubber and some versions of Trucha Signer have problems opening the ISO. As far as I know the ISO is valid (it certainly boots and works with our tools), so I’m going to assume that this is a bug in those applications that will need to be fixed.

  • A new version of Wii scrubber has also been released that I’m told works fine with this template. The old one had trouble detecting it as a Wii disc, as it used the DiscID’s first character which isn’t the more common “R” in this ISO. For future reference, the best way of distinguishing a Wii image from a Gamecube image is probably using the disc magic instead (this is what IOS uses).

  • DVD access for Homebrew coming soon…
    • DVD Access Library (no modchip required)
  • While Nintendo did reply to bushing’s open letter, he has not succeeded in establishing a conversation with an engineer about the issue. Furthermore, we have learned that they received and read at least two of the original three e-mails that were sent prior to the open letter, and decided not to reply (in fact, one of their replies was to one of the original e-mails, but only after the open letter was posted). Therefore, we can only conclude that they are not very interested in the issue.

As many of you may already know or have deduced, the bug in our open letter referred to a way of reading DVD-Rs (and Video DVDs) without the use of a modchip. Several people have investigated the bug independently, and they’ve gotten pretty close. However, we did discover an easier way of enabling this mode from homebrew, which, among other things, does not require any changes to IOS at all. This method is also relatively difficult to transform into some sort of backup loader.

Erant has been developing a library that uses this trick to enable DVD access for homebrew. We hope to release it this coming week, after a few details have been polished. svpe and dhewg have been working on a native mplayer port that uses this library to play back DVDs, which we hope to release as a proof-of-concept together with the library. We also have DVD-loading versions of snes9x and Genplus.

Non-modchip users will not need a custom IOS. Ironically, this method doesn’t work for users of some modchips. Therefore, these users will require a patched IOS using the well-known UnencryptedRead patch (the library will automatically use it if needed). We’ll try to release a somewhat more user-friendly version of patchmii dedicated to this task together with the library.

  • Softmod exploit found for Wii?
    • Waninkoko seems to have released the bug to a fellow hacker and they seemed to have cracked it.
  • The exploit is all about the Nintendo’s idiotness. If you look at the DVD commands taken from the Revolution SDK there’s 8E DVDLowEnableDVDVideo, that they forgot to remove. If you can modify IOS to use this funcion instead, this activates a special mode from the DVD to enable DVD-R reading (in this case, its purpose was enabling VIDEO DVD’s)

If you modify IOS to enable this (you need to do it in a special way), you could enable reading of DVD-R’s from homebrew and the DVD drive would read it.

About backup loading.. you have to work that out a bit first.

To read data once DVD-Video mode is activated, another special funcition is used, that is, a backup would use the normal function, not the dvd-video one, so you would have to hack a little more for the backups to load.

DVD_LowEnableVideo was programmed for a DVD player that they didn’t create, but they left it there. The thing is, activating DVD Video mode is not simple as it checks for the UID of the process that wants to activate it, it can only be activated if the UID is 0, depending if the mode is activated or not, a variable is set to 1 or 0.

Using another reading function which is very similar to DVD_LowUnencryptedRead you could read discs in dvd-video mode and read sectors in a normal way. The problem is that DVD games use DVD_LowRead; to read data from the game partition we need it to use the special reading function, ¿how? Hacking IOS (creating a backup-only IOS), patching-on-the-fly (difficult).

  • Even More NAND Flash Hax

ChipD is a lean, mean, solderin’ machine — I have some of these TSOP sockets, and they are really really hard to solder down to a PCB that you actually care about. Also, they tend to melt if you breathe on them — but maybe that’s just me. I really like the way he made that slick cutout panel for the socket. Link[3]

  • Nintendo issues new update

This is more like a 3.3v2. Its still shows 3.3 but it states that the only change included in this update is the photo channel. I would encourage people to be cautious when updating to this. Although it states that it only updates the photo channel AND Homebrew still works, it could also have blocked the bug that Bushing reported last week.

Most Recent Update

  • Photo Channel 1.1-a
    • An update was made available for the Wii console which provides behind-the-scenes support for a new service that has been released only in Japan.

  • Bushing releases “xyzzy”

Despite all the bashing and flaming that Bushing has received as of late. He still delivers when unexpected.. therefore he has released a tool that extracts keys from your own Wii

This program will do the following, automatically:

  • Download IOS11 from the Nintendo Update Server
  • Patch it to remove the MEM2 protection (so the PPC can access all 64MB of it)
  • Patch it to allow it to delete itself later using ES_DeleteTitle()
  • Find an unused IOS slot (counting downward from IOS255)
  • Install the hacked IOS11 there
  • Reboot into the hacked IOS
  • Copy the private key structure from the IOS address space into MEM1
  • Reboot back into a sane IOS
  • Delete the temporary, hacked IOS
  • Display the keys on screen
  • Try to write them to a file on the SD card — keys.txt
  • Pause for 60 seconds to allow you to copy the keys down using pen and paper,if necessary

  • Update
  • Nintendo Responds to Bushing?

Bushing recently updated his blog stating that a response has been made from Nintendo. Comments were protected during the conversion, but is now open for the community to view.

Update: A representative from Nintendo has contacted me (see comment below). The rest of you can stop emailing me now. Assuming Nintendo acts in good faith, I don’t expect to be writing much more about this until it’s resolved.
