I've considered what you guys have been saying, and I've decided to stick with my original decision and maintain a closed version of the library for the reasons I cited before.

However, feel free to create your own open source libraries; I have no problem with this and would be glad to help. Also feel free to create open source libraries that link to WiiRemoteJ (if you'd like to add more high-level functions to the library, for instance). In the meantime, I am committed to developing WiiRemoteJ and will continue to work on it for the foreseeable future. If you have any questions or need any help developing your library, feel free to shoot me an email or post here. Smile

Due to the closed source policy of Cha0s library and the GPL* nature of BePos, I've decided to create my own**.

The current version ( 0.8 ) is licensed under the Apache License 2.0 and supports the following features:

* Discover and connect to Wiimote devices
* Wiimote IR Camera in both basic and extended mode
* Wiimote Accelerometer
* Wiimote rumble feature
* Wiimote player LEDs
* Wiimote buttons
* Read Wiimote EEPROM memory
* Write Wiimote registers
* Wiimote Status Information
* Wiimote Calibration Data

You can find the project at http://motej.sourceforge.net/

Please forgive this kind of shameless self promotion, but I think this is the right place to post an announcement like this.

best regards,
Volker

* It's not that I don't like the GPL, I just think its the wrong license for libraries.
** .. and to keep me busy over the holidays Smile

Thanks for the library, Volker! I'd gotten quite a way into writing my own implementation, but kept getting distracted by little details. Wink

I understand why Cha0s wants to keep complete control over his source, but I agree that having a working implementation to read over helps understanding a lot.

Are you going to take suggestions or code submissions for enhancements to MoteJ? I've got a couple of features in my library that you might be interested in, such as:

  • Connect to remote by address without requiring discovery. This is useful for speeding up connection if you're in a bluetooth-heavy environment or if you know you'll be using one of a small number of remotes.
  • Timeouts on connection, and ability to retry connections if a remote times out. -- I added this after I noticed that Bluecove + WIDCOMM doesn't like connecting to a remote that is placed into discoverable mode after the connection open attempt is being made.

Again, thanks for the open-source lib!

Hi Kintar,

you - as everyone else - are very welcome to subscribe yourself to the motej-developers or -users list and exchange thoughts, ideas, bug reports as well as code to enhance the library. That said, yes, I am very interested in anything you want to contribute.

hope to hear from you soon,
Volker
