Wouldnt it be possible to sniff and save a copy of the wifi packets sent to the wii during downloading a channel or game and possibly figure out what does what. Or is this not possible? Please post here _________________ My name is not odd just because it doesnt have numbers.

With the recent Super Paper Mario related brick going around, spoofing a dns server to download an alien firmware could be possible.
The easiest part of this is of course, the dns spoofing. |

I had an idea.
Copy a channel to an SD card, then copy the channel to your computer. run it through a PowerPC dissasembler and see if we can make anything out of that. _________________

lopagof: Yes, it would be possible, and some are exploring that option. However, when you start the Wiiconnect24/store, the user agreement states that 1)You are forbiden to do that and 2) Nintendo owns whatever you make if you do. Item 1 would likely not hold up in court, but item 2 is odd and probably unprecedented in the legal sense. Item 2 is particularly tricky if you're in the USA, as the DMCA could quite easily be invoked to take down your site, and potentially sue you for distributing copyrighted material.
mx: Indeed, it is being explored.
conorkirk: Channels as well as Virtual Console games are encrypted before getting to the SD card, so just disassembling them won't help. |

tom61, how would they know if we were doing this though? It would all be done locally on an individual basis, and once Wiili is 'downloaded' we could easily just erase all the dns spoof information.
The only problems with this method is the speed and download times. I mean, not to mention the complex configuration involved, it wouldn't be as simple as modifying a net-install CD. _________________ Java Coder... oh god...

The problem with the user agreement isn't doing the hack, it's distributing it. Nintendo lays copyright to anything that expliots the channel adding feature in the WiiConnect24 agreement. Any US site that even links to the exploit could recieve a valid DMCA take down notice. International developers have been arrested for less when in this country. [/url] |

You can always upload to a torrenting website.
Anyway with the dumped firmware a custom firmware (Similar to the OE's on the PSP) would be handy for running homebrew and ISO's. |
