Yea, the TV is perfectly flat. Its an actual projector screen. 8 feet across, tab tensioned, motorized. Even if it was tho, it shouldn't actually distort it, since the remote is only going to see the source, but it would limit the sideways range.
I found some with 5mW, but that may be too much. I don't want to damage the screen.

50$ aint bad. I will call and get a 'sample' set. Sometimes I hate calling for electronic samples, because I get mail spammed for years with flyers and sale info. Of course, from time to time I find something interesting.
I wonder how well these would integrate with a Gumstix Micro PC... They have bluetooth, and are running a full kernel (not uClinux IIRC). I should try mine out. Doubt it would do anything more then increase the range via some kinda fancy repeater setup, with signal rebroadcasting. /tangent
Anyhow, I will order some 980nm's, and see what happens. I will post success/failure. |

If its a projector screen I hope you haven't bought anything yet. A standard IR LED will be viewable to the wii remote from BEHIND the screen. Of course you can test this, if you happen to have a bright led on a usb flash drive or something, hook it up behind the screen with the lights off and see how visible it is. I know some leds are viewable through a quarter inch of flesh.
Just an idea to save you a lot of money |

I just realized my recommendation was poor, I didn't fully think about what to use to test the ability to pass through the screen. Most usb leds are dim, but many leds in devices are crazy bright. Anything with a bright led would be good to test, and if you buy IR LEDS get the highest intensity you can find. Maybe these
.... [I cant post the link, thanks stupid anti spam rules]...
go to "eled" dot com and search for IR LED
I don't know what wavelength, I'm trying to find that out myself. I suspect it is not too picky though.
A LED keychain or LED maglight would work, a laser pointer might work as well. |

I don't have a perforated screen, and even then, it still wouldn't be intense enough. It simply diffuses the light far too much. I put my sensor bar behind my TV, and, while its visible, its not enough for the wiimote to get a good signal from. Normally, I need a sensitivity of 3 for it to work for me with the standard sensor bar. If I put it right up against the screen, with a '5', it flickers badly. It is mostly off. I would need substantially more powerful LED's.
With lasers, it could also be a solution for others with exceptionally large screens, such as plasma's or DLP.
I am also pursuing finding lenses for a standard LED that could focus it. I have found some that are 10$, which is far less then the 50$ of a laser LED, and allow cheaper changing of wavelengths. |
