1. The wii sends an encryption key to nintendo, and the game is encrypted server side, or

2. Nintendo send the unencrypted game to the wii, and it's then encrypted before it can run

option 3 : the wii is shipped with the public key of nintendo VC. It can then be sure to connect to the official site (encrypted) to send out its own public key and get back an encrypted rom only decryptable by its private key.

If that's the case, this way is reallllly difficult to tackle.

Like ssh. While I hope that's not it, it does seem likely.

It's also possible that the vc games are stored unencrypted on the Wii itself and is encrypted as it's copied to SD (which would explain why it takes far longer than it should to copy said files). Of course, there'd have to be some sort of hand shaking going on between the Wii and Shop to make sure the user isn't trying to download their own things onto it.

The people over on mozy (The people who did the original browser hack) thought that when you requested a VC game from the server, you would download vcgamename.tmd and then once it was on your Wii it turned into content.bin and they thought once the .tmd file was downloaded, your Wii did some kind of encryption with itself to make it run. As of now there is no way to say 100% which way it works though...

Check out this link on darkfader's site. http://darkfader.net/wii/vc/ Its got the tmd file of all the VC games except a few of the new ones (DK Jr etc...)

Now I know this thread is old, and this isn't my account (Simple forum tricks seem to work with all forums these days... =/ ) I thought I'd put my two cents/sense in lol. I obtained roughly 350$ worth of VC games in a very unorthodox way. When the unorthodox way was found out, all my VC games were deleted... except for the "HARD" copies on my SD card which can no longer be transferred back to the wii. So I'm assuming somethin' Nintendo Side, needs to know you have the game, and they check on it... and can be "Cancelled" kind of like rental games... Dunno thought this might help someone on their conquest of challenging VC methods for WiiLi running. Viva La Linux =)
