I meant the entire WiiLi forums, not just 'WiiLi Development'. The real hacking is not on this domain, though some things do end up in the Wiki here(not many though).
If you believe that there's no point, or at least not worth the effort, to porting Linux to the Wii, why are you here?
As for getting unsigned code working, what have you done in this regard? Hmm? If you were under the impression that this site was run by coders and hard-core hackers, take a look at the Wii Linux Bounty page. That should remove any doubt that the maintainers of this site are not the ones to crack the Wii.
Getting arbitrary code running on the Wii is looking to be as difficult as getting the 360 to run it, and will likely take as long. However, I have little doubt that Linux will eventually run on the Wii, because, for the hackers dedicated to this task, it is about the journey, not the destination.
I could give you a fair number of usage senarios, tell you how I would use it, and counter every point you've made, but we're going in circles really.
In the end, I doubt either of us (or a significant amount of the forum goers here) can submit anything useful to the quest to get arbitrary code running. I'm lucky if I can understand half of the stuff about the really hard-core hacking on the Wii's flash and RAM that is going on elsewhere. |

I think studying a related topic at university would be useful and seeing as I don't I'm just here as an end-user.
I hate it when people ask "What's the point?" The answer would have to be "because we feel like it." For instance, I changed the firmware on my iPod to RockBox. Why? Because of Vorbis support. I could have easily converted all my vorbis files to MP3, but why bother when I have added functionality?
Even if WiiLi doesn't add that much, it's an OS on a console, what's not to like? Saves me having to build a PC. I'd rather have a Wii next to my stylish flatscreen TV than a boring hunk of personal computer.
Why do you think the Xbox and PS3 are pushing multimedia on their consoles? _________________ Java Coder... oh god...

Well, I see this is a hot topic and I got pretty interested in it. Let me give you guys my point of view.
Why porting Linux to the Wii??? Some say: Just because we feel like it or To add new functionality. If we go back to the history of Linux we could ask: Why did Linus Torvalds start his own OS? and look at it right now, we have a powefull, stable, reliable OS that's being used everywhere to run high-end apps and he started writing Linux just as a hobby!!!!!!!!!! Let's face it Linux is becoming mainstream.
Some people join these kind of projects just for the sake of it, others for curiosity, others in order to learn something new and in knowledge, there is people out there that even got jobs for contributing to the community, don't believe me? Let me state an example:
You guys know GNOME or the Mono Project? I think that everyone in a Linux forum knows at least GNOME. You know the name of it's creator? His name is Miguel de Icaza and he is a mexican guy who decided to make an easier to use GUI for Linux and UNIX systems as an open source proyect. Today he is working for Novell as a vice-president of the developement team. Imagine that!!!!!!
Well, I just wanted to give you guys my point of view

Registered just to post here. I think there is a lot of reason for running linux on the wii. Linux has a lot of software, by running linux, you will be able to run a lot of that software. For me, I would looove to get a bittorrent client working. I don't see how a desktop pc bears any relation to the wii. Sure, they have similar hardware and structure, but do most desktop pc's use less than 16 Watts of electricity? The wii is also very silent. From my experience, I've only heard sounds when it boots up and when there's a disc in the drive. So, IMO, it would make the perfect low energy/low noise media centre.
With the release of the homebrew channel, it should be fairly straightforward to port linux. There have already been 2 releases by the gclinux team but I'm not sure sure if that was in wiimode or not...
There are a quite a lot of homebrew apps available now for the wii, WiiMiidia looks quite promising. It uses mplayer as a backend as well as the PoC linux.
Oh and btw, does the PoC have internet support? |
