Do we already have a repository setup (CVS, SVN, etc.)? Or is this some thing that we need to be looking into?

Rather then you CVS. Please use SVN (Subversion) paired with apache to give a nice WebDAV interface over standard HTTP.

If you could use some extra help setting up, and or designing the server/development environment I will donate some time. I have experience setting up these kinds of things. As this is an open source project there are many great commercial options that could be utilized. One example is Atlassian's Jira for issue management. Maybe not right away, as it's a bit heavy. Perhaps just Subversion and Trac? MythTV uses this setup quite successfully. http://svn.mythtv.org/trac/ The wiki could be merely used for instructions, like MythTV does, since this wiki is already running and filling with content. Trac provides a nice browsing interface to subversion, and a simple issue tracking program.

My email and AIM name can be found in my profile. Feel feel to contact me directly. I look forward to contributing to this project. I love my Wii !

Let's setup a poll for this. I will get CVS/SVN ready as soon as we move to a dedicated server.

An open poll isn't going to be useful here because many non-developers would participate in it. The first thing that needs to happen is creation of a list of "probable commiters". A separate list of serious wiki contributors could also be maintained, but wiki's usually can take care of themselves. Initially you will have an identification problem. You don't know who to count votes for to make decisions like which tools to setup on the server. I might be some crazy guy in Texas that took 4 hours to type this comment with hunt and peck... you don't know yet.

The svn/cvs decision is honestly the least of the worries. It's the how much to indent and whether or not to use tabs in code that's going to get you!

What exactly are you doing for the dedicated server? Are you staying with dreamhost or doing something else?

I want to be as fair as possible to everyone on the site. But I understand your point of part of the community not having experience to be part of this decision.

I'm going to use the donations to pay for a complete year of a dedicated server.

I don't want to be at a point where I can't afford to pay the monthly server and bandwidth usage. Failing with this will affect the efforts of not just me but many people that are making WiiLi a base for their contribution to the open source community.

Thus the need to find a good dedicated server with un-metered bandwidth, and pay for complete year of it.

If you want SVN now we could use Dreamhost temporary, just let us know what your plans are, as your posts clearly denotes a radical interest on our effort.

I would assist in installing and configuring SVN on any linux server for the team. Like I said, any linux box is going to have most of what's needed out of the box. I only mentioned dreamhost as it's your current server.

Another option to save the trouble of paying for all the bandwidth is to use sourceforge for the code hosting and any distributable files. They offer unlimited bandwidth for projects. In fact there is already a wii-linux project that has been created. https://sourceforge.net/projects/wii-linux/ ( We'll get them to join us! )

Sourceforge's only downside is you must select a license when you create the project. This protects everyone involved in contributing as they know what license their code is going under.

Are you purchasing a dedicated server in a data center? or are you running it yourself? I am curious because $600 doesn't seem like much to get a server with unlimited bandwidth for the whole year. I believe running and controlling the wiki yourself is the best idea, along with passing off the big downloads to sourceforge.

Hopefully I am being of some help providing things to think about. Now, I must get home and improve my wii tennis score.... my girlfriend currently has a higher score then me... 842 to 754... *shakes head*

I plan to rent a dedicated server. Most dedicated server sellers like Layeredtech.com for example will waive setup fees and give you a good deal if you pay for a complete year in advance. $600 should be enough for a descent machine.

But with so much traffic and the current load I'm now wondering what kind of server and connection would we need to provide a fast and reliable service to the WiiLi community???

Traffic is increasing daily and I can't imagine what will happen after Europe and Asia gets the Wii and once we boot the kernel, and get the wiimote drivers ready.

So yes, a 600 dollar for a year of a server may not be enough. That was my idea for the server before we starting to get over 60.000 page views a day.

I think I can negotiate with the server company a discount or upgrade in exchange for a banner on our site?

Also I'm removing the current Amazon adds and adding a donation box on the forums similar to the WiKi and try to get the money for the server faster.

I don't know how else to raise funds for this thing, please help me with ideas. If you can't think on an idea drop a dollar into our fund. Smile

If you know a good dedicated server company that we could use, that is very well know and offer quality servers and no el cheapo server hosting, please post about them here.

We need a fast, secure and reliable server.
