Now my question is, using this back door 2, do we need a mod chip? Or will we be able to use some sort of boot loader?

And it sucks about the Wii homebrew deal....

Back door number two is into the drive's electronics, so, yes, you'll need a mod chip. Good news is most any PIC or AVR can be programmed to do the job, so you're talking in the range of $20 and under.
