Don't they have to release the source code, so sayeth the GPL, if they use a linux-based kernel? Perhaps, if we ask, Nintendo may even *hand* us some source code or linux drivers or APIs or hardware interface suggestions.

The rumor that the Wii runs on a Linux-based kernel (and would therefore be subject to the GPL) was started by a now-revealed prankster (read his confession at http://saruwatari-wii.blogspot.com).

Is there work on a true team to devolop this? I am wondering because I see this as something that can be greatly used as a cheap home computer for people that arent tech savy. I myself would volenteer to create formal testing methodology and any testing related activities as I am a Test Engineer Lead by trade. I also would be glad to help with any development or networking issues as I have much experience in those areas.

Here's what the manual says:
This product contains PrFILE(R)2 FAT file system, PrMAIL mail client library, and PrUSB/Host USB host stack of eSOL Co., Ltd.

The first place I would look for development info would be http://www.esol.co.jp/english/index.html.

For the WiiLi project, I will be more than willing to do product testing and help with technical support issues that come up here in the forums. I really believe that to make this project successful it will need to be as easy as possible for the average user and being able to provide support for those users will help drive popularity.

Also, I could help by doing public relations work for the project. I work extremely well with the media and could perform interviews for the project.

There is no way Nintendo would let us buy an SDK from them, however, who knows one might pop up on ebay?
