Hey I dont know much about programming or code or any of that but I thought this might come in handy. When I plugged my iPod into my Wii to charge it via USB. I got the "Do Not Disconnect" msg which is only supposed to happen when you plug it into your PC. (Please note I did the same thing on my 360 and the iPod just picked it up as though I was charging it through an AC Adapter). This I would assume means the Wii actually tried to recognize the device and use it. (This makes sense considering the USB ports are there for things such as accessesories that arent out yet for Wii). So it may be possible to boot an OS from an external harddrive (such as an iPod). If a programmer can find an exploit somewhere... I think it may be possible to boot Linux from something as small is a simple flash drive.
Again.. I dont know much about this stuff, just contributing what I can. _________________ Wii=the meaning of life

Hey, this sounds interesting, im no programmer (beginner).
but im gonna plug all my usb stuff in and se how they react
maybe nintendo are on their way to support usb drives?
and havent fully implemented it, just left the code in the update or something _________________ Project starter/leader of TrueLoveDS |

Haha, that's the iPod's firmware reaction when it receives power from USB. "Do Not Disconnect" simply means the iPod is receiving 5V of power via USB from a powered port, indicating USB. Don't get too excited, I doubt that the USB function of the Wii is going to allow a backdoor. Good to see thinking though! _________________ ~Triforce~

| I know this is an old topic. But I was playing around with my flash drive today, and had it in the back of my Wii. I noticed something the sparked some curiosity. The light on my flash drive blinked while the Wii was in hibernation. I've only seen my flash drive blink like that when data is being written or accessed. Now when I turn my Wii on fully, the light solidifies. There's something besides the Wii simply providing power to the drive going on, but the question is what. |

he, im back at the forum, ive had some hard time at school
anyway, triforce, thats a dumb response you posted, obviously!
The Ipod, or any other "big space" mp3/4 player, like my Sansa, only show the "Dont disconnect" when the data is being accessed! if its only recieving 5 volt via usb, like with a adapter that goes straight into the wall, and provides a USB port strictly for charging the battery meter just fills, like on a cellphone, i have one, o i know.
My Sansa reacted the same way like DSgamers Ipod, so obviously there is partial functions for accessing USB drives in the Wii's frimware already
but yes, most likely, it wont be exploitable _________________ Project starter/leader of TrueLoveDS |

GizmoTheGreen is right, iPosd will only show "Do not disconnect" when it's been mounted. If it's just recieving power, then it's only the battery indicator that changes. Just hook an iPod up to an older/simpler Linux distro. My school uses Gentoo pretty much exclusively and you can't use flash drives because Gentoo doesn't automatically mount drives and to do it manually requires root access. So I can plug my iPod in here to charge and listen to music, but I can't access any files through the computer.
The Wii does mount USB devices. I guarantee you that. iPods prove that. Johnman's flash drive proves that. The only problem is that there's no interface for accessing them. My (admittedly conspiracy) theory is that Nintendo discovered a major bug in it's implementation shortly before launch so removed the functionality from the interface until they could get it fixed. USB storage was promised, after all, and is a relatively easy thing to implement, so the only way they could fall back on that promise is if there was something seriously wrong. |

Very interesting.
When I plug in my iPod Nano 2nd gen into my wii, it just displays the charging icon in the upper right hand corner of it's screen.
Maybe nintendo has patched this or something, even though it seems nothing could be done with it before anyway.
Here's an image:
(it's a little hard to see because the camera is focusing on the tv, not the ipod screen ) |
