The lightweight window managers would certainly run on the Wii. However, they will use a good piece of the resources to do so. This is mostly likely to be step one. ie. Get Xorg and a lightweight manager running. Step two will be to take out any unneeded parts, and tightly integrate an accelerated driver for the ATI GPU in the Wii.

Personally, first, I would like to see the wiili project itself create a reasonably novel interface that utilizes the unique controls in an effective way. Obviously going open source we can base that project off an already existing system, windowMaker could honestly use a rework anyway.

Look seriously at maemo for the nokia 770.

The 770 has a touch screen, 64MB ram and a screen resolution of 800x480, not so different from the Wii.

I really believe this interface would work well for the Wii.

IF the video encoder chip is locked at a maximum res of 480p then the Wii will never be anything more than an embedded type system (like the 770).

What is the feasibility of using XFCE as a desktop environment. Configured correctly, it can run on very low resources, and visually is very close to gnome, which a large percentage of linux users are already used to.

I've used XFCE for quite some time on some very old machines that I use as test servers.

I think Xfce is a best option too, it's more fast than kde, and it's cool..
But i think first of all this debate, kernel must be run on wii... Wink
