Finally, I figured out how to do this, and it only requires xmodmap:
xmodmap -pm
lists which key symbols are mapped to each modifier key
xmodmap -e "add [mod] = [sym]"
adds "sym" as a trigger for "mod", where "mod" is shift, control, mod1 (alt), or a couple others. As with regular key bindings (see the README), add the configurations to ~/.Xmodmap.
I haven't tested this extensively, but it's worked for everything so far. Any of you Beryl folks want to try out the crazy ctrl+shift+alt events? _________________ "I seldom let practicality get in the way of my fascination with shiny things and blinky lights."

I'm not really sure what you mean.
I entered these commands:
xmodmap -e "add control = 0x25"
xmodmap -e "add shift = 0x32"
But what should I enter in ~/.Xmodmap and /etc/cwiid/buttons?
I would like 1 to be shift and 2 to be control. |

The .Xmodmap file is just a list of xmodmap commands that are run on (X) startup, so just add the stuff in quotes to your xmodmap files.
Map buttons 1 and 2 to whatever key symbols generate key codes 0x25 and 0x32. _________________ "I seldom let practicality get in the way of my fascination with shiny things and blinky lights."
