there are two ways that I can think of. #1 A usb dohicky that connects the sensor bar to the computer. #2 connect the sesor bar to the Wii and have it send it's responses through the network. Unfortunately, #2 seems like a more viable option.

I wonder if the Wii Remote will be picked up by a bluetooth enabled computer. If not, I'm sure someone will make an adapter (though Lik-Sang is out of business)

Another reason to dislike Sony. Corporate wankers. They have linux dev kits for the Playstations to encourage developers but give someone a way to enjoy their hardware more and they yank it out.

In other news... thanks Gizmo. I forgot about the motion sensing part. Duh! While the controllers are bluetooth the sensor needs to be plugged in. Not sure how easy it'd be to set up something like that on a PC. I wouldn't imagine it being too difficult to pair the controllers but you'd only have use of the buttons at that point.

I'm pretty sure with the right drivers the controller would work fine without an IR strip, it just wouldn't have on-screen pointing. So it wouldn't be useful as a mouse but it would still have usable buttons AND tilt/motion detection.

Apparently all you need to the sensor bar is voltage, it doesnt sense anything, and only emits IR from two clusters of four IR LEDs

Thats what I've determined based on various forum/thread reading and this video

Something about this really excites me.. it could be the fact that I could build a "sensor" bar for travel(or my PC) and leave the original stuck on the TV

I think the wii remote will revolutionize if not spark a revolution in pointing devices..

The hardest part will be decoding the bluetooth signal it sends(the driver)

If i can find some IR LEDs im going to build a ghetto(proof of concept Razz ) sensor bar today..

I basically work in one Laughing

I've got all my parts, I had to run home and check the voltage, then called my dad and asked him to pick up some resistors..

but upon taking my wii to their house i got a little distracted playing sports with my parents.. Rolling Eyes

So when i go back to work today i think i'll use all of my resources there to put things together..

Here's what ive found so far:

i measured 12.16v from the plug for the sensor bar on the back of the wii..
cant remember the polarity, will check before i go to work..
edit: slanted side of the plug is negative

the plug will probably need an adaptor for a custom "sensor" bar
which im thinking just cut the sensor bar plug off and use some mini audio plugs or something similar..

Things i dont know/will soon find out:

whether the two LEDs i got will be bright enough (they seem larger than the ones in the bar, but thats not saying much..)

how spacing affects the remote..

I seemed to have hijacked this thread, im going to move over here

I'm messing with the Wiimote under Linux. I think it might use the extra bytes in the long report formats to return the extra IR data, but I can't figure out how to enable it. Maybe the Pixart sensor requires some sort of crazy initialization?

I'll keep looking at it.
