I realize that this forum section is for the IR Sensor Bar, but I think since this relates to IR and the Wii it will be OK?
Anyways..I REALLY want an IR pen. And I realize that you can make them yourself and such, but I don't have the tools to make the housing, etc. If someone could make me an IR pen with a button to turn the IR LED on that would be amazing. Of course I'm willing to pay.
Thanks,

..you want a IR led where you point to the wiimote and the cursor moves?
...its indeed easy to make...anyone with a few minutes will make ya one near you...
IR Leds use 1.2V normally..
get something like a ink Pen to write....cannibalize it....you get the housing...
IR LED stays on the tip...
here is the fast schematic..
http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/6283/irpenvp4.png
g1+g2 are the battery's...1.5V each = 3V
R1 is the resistor
D1 is the IR LED
K1 is the switch (sorry couldn't find one)
3-1.2 = 1.8 V
led should consume something like 10Ma max!
R=1.8/0.010=180 Ohms
....find the nearest resistance...if you cant get 180 then get something up...190, 200, 210
i think it should work like this......if you can find someone near you that has a soldering iron i can give ya more instructions.
battery's case are easily found..in electronics shop along the rest of the stuff...
you're European? i could make one..but its prolly gonna be lost in mail...like everything always is!....lol |

Hehe. Thanks for the detailed reply. I appreciate the time you took to explain all that. However (heh) I did (I think) mention that I already found tutorials on how to do this, and if I wanted to spend the time I could probably make the circuit myself, however the housing is a different story. I want one that operates and looks quite nice, and I really don't have the time/tools to do that. I can, however, right the software to interact with that and I have no problem with it... I'm a Computer Science guy...not a Mechanical/Electrical Engineer . |

I went out to Spencer's and bought this pen ($5)
Then I went to radioshack and bought this IR LED ($2)
I Took off the cap. Broke off the "Flashlight" LED. Cut the "feet" off my IR LED. Placed it where the old LED was..and voila we have light. The only real problem is it isn't in there very tightly and sometimes the connection slips. The 2 connectors (Positive/Ground) don't even come out above the surface, so I'm stuck trying to cram the LED right next to those..is there anyway I can glue/solder/something this inplace? I'm getting really frustrated right now because every-so-often it'll move out of place...and to make matters worse the WiiMote doesn't detect this single LED very well

hmmm i see that the led is very dim...or doesnt has big angle...but no problem with angle...
anyways
to check if wiimote detects it...
debug=wiimote.dot1size
or
debug=wiimote.dot1vis
about the problem with led coming loose..cant you put it inside? ...if needed open the hole just a bit...you just need the led to be half outside since the angular view of them is about 40ยบ or less normally...
if you need some help housing it...ill need more details or photos to get it to be fixed and tight, but i think thats quite easy |

I know how to check if it can detect it or not, but thanks .
As for fixing the housing..it really isn't possible..it's made of metal and I don't have the tools to put it in any lower..so I think I'm stuck on this one |

...thats bad...dont yo know anyone with those things to make holes in the wall?? cant remenber how its called in english...lol...
carefully you should be able to open a bigger hole in it...
other choice is a dremell...perfect tool for it......
cant be more of help...the thing not detecting your led ...could be that the led emits in a frequency out of the band the camera in wiimote can see it...wich is awkward.....
you could try to make wiimote see the sensor bar first and after you check its working use the Ir pen. |
