Im thinking about buying a SIXAXIS controller, but, do the current SIXAXIS driver run the SIXAXIS well on the computer?
What Do you guys think, I dont currently own a ps3, but like to use the ps3 controler on my pc.

The PS3 doesn't have cool hackers like us. But there is a partial driver out there for the SIXAXIS on the PC. There is a hack for the windows HID driver that makes the SIXAXIS appear like an ordinary gamepad (otherwise it doesn't work), but only when plugged in via its USB cable (not wireless). The SIXAXIS doesn't have a Sync button, and you can't hold down 1+2. Instead the computer needs to send it a HID report over USB which tells it to become discoverable. BUT we don't know what that command is, or even if it is possible to do without a PIN of some sort.

BUT the main problem with using the SIXAXIS on the PC (aside from being tied to it by a wire) is that nobody has worked out how to read the motion sensors yet. It sounds like the same problem with reading the accelerometers on the Wiimote, you need to send a HID report to tell it to turn it on.

I like to think that some HID report-sending experts like us could work it out. But I don't know. Nobody has yet, but nobody has been really trying.

Lol, yea, thats quite true.

Though I had more expectiations for the ps3 SIXAXIS controller to work on the controller, Because I thought It would be cool to use the motion sensors to look around in CounterStrike, and to use all those buttons for other stuff. But whatever, Thanks for the advice Carl.

If I ever need something like you described, I'll Just buy the ps2 usb gamepad.

hi guys sorry to intrude./.resurrect an old thread. the guys at pabr dot org have a funky tech demo of the sixaxis + motion sensing working under linux

their source of the pairing procedure over usb can be found there too

the sixaxis only has one gyro inside to measure the yaw axis this is reasonable considering the form of the controller. the sixaxis can be used as a passable inertial measuring unit as long as it is kept on the correct plane.

which brings me to my point .the wiimote has extensible architecture (using 2ic) goddam it and I want gyros.
a unit could be made small enough to sit on the expansion port (pretty much the wrists axis of rotation.. perfect location for a gyro or three). while I doubt nintendo would produce another addon for people to require to play games. its not beyond the homebrew community to realize and use..
anyway i'm sure i'm not the only one with this idea. and if I have any success i will let people know
(I now have my three gyros after my sixaxis is mysteriously broken and returned a few times Smile haha)

The Wii Remote is far more versatile and flexible when it comes to motion input (and IR takes it to a whole 'nother level). The shape of the Remote makes it easier to twist and slide about in the hand while doing something like steering a vehicle. The SIXAXIS' prongs which have been used since the very first PS controller, are meant to stabilize it's position in your hand, and that's counter-effective to wide-motion tilting. The advantages that the SIXAXIS has over the Wii Remote (pressure sensitive buttons, analog triggers, and a second analog stick) are also found on the X360 controller, with the added benefit of strong rumble and wireless connectivity (with the controller hub). I've got all three consoles and all three controllers, and with GlovePIE in the mix, I find the Wii controllers to be the most appealing for PC use so far.

Tiger.. I agree the wiimote is by far the most appropriate next gen controller for using with glove pie so far. that is because it is as close as matters to fully supported. while the sixaxis only functions as a standard joy (not even pressure sensitive buttons)

there is a difference of approach with these controllers and I would say that for universal purposes they are very evenly matched. with each out performing the other in app specific use.

I personally find the sixaxis offers more than the wiimote for what i want (cheap inertial measurement unit) for playing with 3d interface ideas.. its form as mentioned is limiting but it needs to be.. heres hoping the next motion capable controllers are more fully featured as the tech gets cheaper

the wiimote.

pointing
gestures
tilt on 2 axis
exensible

the sixaxis

simple 3d positional (as long as the controller is held correctly)
tilt on 3 axis
conventional joys
