Hey I think it's great that you want to put Linux on the Wii, and indeed with built in networking and usb ports it will be more useful than Gamecube linux, but have you considered the fact that there will be some sort of protection built into the system that will make it difficult to run unauthorized discs?

I guess it annoys me that you make all these claims about what WiiLi will do, but you actually have no idea how long it will be until these protections will be circumvented. In the case of the Gamecube it was not until well into the system's life that it was able to boot burned discs.

I admire your ambition, but please make some disclaimer on your main page that this is not a project that is going to be up and running anytime soon. There are already posts on other forums by people thinking that they'll be running linux at launch.

It should not take as long as it took for the Gamecube. Again the gamecube hardware is very similar to the Wii's, and we don't start from zero, like the Gamecube hackers did.

Check out the homepage, Done!

and welcome by the way!

Ok, I know you just got started on this so I understand if you can't say for sure yet, but I have a question about the wiimote in WiiLi. Will the wiimote support only involve the pointer input or you be able to program based on input from the accelerometers and the nunchuck too?

I have a feeling this might bet getting into devKit territory, but since you are hacking it.... It'd be really sweet to be able to play with interface ideas and actually have a way to see it in action.

Thanks

Writing drivers for the wiimote is going to be the hardest part of developing Wiili. But once done making use of all the control goodies should be trivial. Shake the nunchuck to switch the desktop perhaps?

At this point I believe making the Wii run Linux should be easy. We will just need minor updates to the work done by the gamecube-linux hackers. Cool

Hi there, I'm NEW to Linux but if Linux is easy to use and can play movies (e.g. rmvb, real media files, avi, divx) off of my external usb harddrive when plugged into the Wii, then that would be so awesome!!! What type of media player will it have? Again, if it can do any of the above, I will support you 100%!!!!

Thanks,

Supes

Supes,

Linux is really easy! try Mandriva One, download it, burn it ona CD and boot in your PC. It won't touch your HD so the next time you restart your pc it will go back to windows as usual.

As per media players, Linux supports most if not all the popular media.

Thank you for your support and welcome aboard!

Cool, I'll try it out soon, hopefully more people can contribute to this site because it sounds very promising!

Thanks
