Assuming one has a mod chip installed, Is it possible to watch a dvd video on the wii? I saw this done on some online video using an SD card but they didnt explain how they did it.

Technically this is very possible. The unmodded Wii only lacks the software to playback DVD movies. With a Drive hack and software implimented you playback movie DVDs.

But the real question is.. Why would you want it to ?
I dont know anyone who doesnt have a dvd player.

I think this is why we havent seen this as a priority mod.

It would not be able to be implemented by a single AVR/PIC. You would need a DVD decompression chip. Also, control schemes wouldn't be available in the Wii software, which would require a HOMEBREW software solution to control it =).

Well in my case, having the ability to play dvd's on the wii would be great because the wii is in my basement, where there is no dvd player. Im sure a lot of people are in this situation. All the current gen. consoles are able to play dvd's so it would be really nice is someone were to figure out how this could be done. Also, like I mentioned before, I've seen this done with an SD card hack online. If anyone knows how to do this could they please share?

No, the SD card is MJPEG =/

Much lossier quality than actual DVD.

No, they used a real dvd, and an SD to somehow launch it. I will try to find the link.
