There is an onscreen indicator when you're playing with the remote. You'll see it at some point. Hit your "Home" button, I think you get it then.

i burnt through 2 pairs in 2 days

Nice. I killed one pair and nearly drained the others before getting an 8 pack of 2500mA Duracells. Now if I lose even one indicator bar I can throw some in the charger to be ready.

Went through an 8 pack in my first week. Rechargables are definately a good idea.
