Hello,

I'm trying to figure out if there is a way to boot GC-Linux on the Wii. There is a video of a guy using Action Replay to launch some emulators (http://www.kotaku.com/gaming/wii/bad-man-plays-emulators-on-his-wii-216551.php) , but can I launch GC-Linux from the Action Replay Disc?

I've never had a Gamecube, so I dont know what is possible with the GC Emulator on the Wii. If it is a true emulator, it should also emulate many of the GC Homebrew software? Is there GC Homebrew??

I've got a Wii and i'm going to be trying a few different things. If you have links related to any of the things mentioned above please share them.

UPDATE: Ok, been reading some more and it looks like GC-Linux never really did much. (http://www.gc-linux.org/wiki/Ported_Software) All I could find were the emulators that were ported over.

I guess a lot still needs to be done before we are cruising around in an ubuntu style linux gui with the wii-mote. But perhaps it will happen sooner than later.

Cheers!

Are there any other hackers on this board?

Ok, So I have the Action Replay and a Wii. It launches the AR Disc, and I get a menu saying 'Insert Action Replay Hardware into Slot-B"

I have a 512 MB sd card in the wii Is there anything else special I need to do or put on the card? Also none of the buttons on the wii-mote seem to do anything. Do I need a classic controller for this to work? I'm guessing the SD slot is being seen as Slot-A. So Now what?

I read somewhere that there is an adapter needed to plug the action replay memory card into the wii. I thought the SD card would replace this. How do I trick the Wii into using the SD Slot as Slot-B? If anyone has info on how this all works please post.

Getting Gamecube Homebrew like this to launch on the Wii is an important step to being able to boot something like linux on it.

I don't have the required hardware, so I can't say for sure... but here's what I think:
1. Get a gamecube memory card SD adapter
2. Put the GC linux image on the SD card
3. Put the memory card apapter with the SD card in the second Wii gamecube memory card slot
4. Plug a gamecube controller into the first port on the Wii
5. Put in AR...

Since you're using a gamecube mod, you'll need to do it exactly as if you had a gamecube.

HAHA, that will teach me to RTFM. I just realized that the top of the Wii has 2 GC memory card slots and 4 GC Controller ports. I had no idea they were there. Now I need to get a GC controller... I will report back if I get it working.

Also, does GC-Linux exist as a GCN .dol file?

Would be cool if you don't need the sd card adapter since the wii already has a sd card reader.

I saw the Kotaku video as well, and I too, cannot boot my AR version (just got it off the shelves today). Here's relevant stuff that I have:

- Official GCN Memory Card 51 (formatted using AR, GCOS1x.dol loaded and works)
- PSO (no, this does NOT work in Wii. When you select ONLINE MODE, it just says that you have to connect the BBA correctly)
- AR v1.14 with normal (64MB) memory card
- and a GCN (kinda obvious by now)

Anyways, I get the same warning when I boot AR in my Wii => "Please insert appropriate hardware in slot B". I have 2 official memory cards inserted in both A and B. I've tested both of them using other GCN games, so I know that they work. Despite that, AR won't boot!!! ARGH!

I'm starting to think the Kotaku video was tampered. Why didn't the filmer show the last part, when he/she was booting GCOS up?

ok, so After gathering together all of the parts needed, I was finally able to run some homebrew on my Wii today.

I don't have a Gamecube memory to SD converter, however, I have an Action Replay GC editing which comes with a GC Disc and a GC Memory card and a Max Drive which also comes with a GC disc and a memory card with a usb port for connecting to PC.

I loaded the GCOS files onto the Max Drive Pro through their pc software, and plugged it into the Wii's Game Cube Memory Slot A, I put the Action Replay into the Wii's GC Memory Slot B, I loaded the Action Replay Disc from the Wii main menu, went to freeloader, ejected the AR disc, and inserted the Max Drive Disc and Max Drive Boots (Wierd because I could not boot this disc from the Wii menu)

So now from the MaxDrive disc I can run .dol files on the Wii.
So far I have loaded GCOS and gone through the menus but nothing really works. What's next? I never had a gamecube, what other Gamecube things should I try?

If any of the developers of this GC software want me to help you test some code, let me know. Is there a .dol loader file for GC Linux?
