More updates:
It seems like most of the .DOL files I've tried to run do not work. It's something weird with the video, it sends out a flickering purple screen and then my TV loses sync. I tried the kernel .dol file for GC-Linux and it would not boot. I have my Wii set to widescreen, maybe that is causing some confusion in the GC Emulator.
Also of some interest, I've been able to crash the Wii Shopping Channel Browser using some Javascript / AJAX code. I am looking for people with experience with Buffer Overflows to help me test a few things. If you know about this kind of stuff, contact me.

The hardwaree esp. the video is much different than the GC. The drivers used would need to be changed and the .dol file updated. I have no exp developing for the GC, but I am a developer here in the US, but currently I am in Austria. I have been following this project since the beginning, and also have a wii. I am a Linux developer but like I said earlier I have no GC development exp. _________________ "Their rumpled clothes, their unwashed and unshaven faces, and their uncombed hair all testify that they are oblivious to their bodies and to the world in which they move. I spent this afternoon and this evening usings sdload to install gc-linux on my gamecube with an nfs root.
All I can say is...man, this is very slow, pretty intolerable. And it's not pretty.
It seems the cube is hanging with lots of nfs errors, the machine serving up nfs is my trusty web server running 64bit gentoo with 2.6.19-r1 on it right now (I had to rebuild the kernel with nfs support).
What also is bad is that the normal debian slowness I notice on desktop machines is compounded in major multiples on this machine.
I'm also a bit hacked because the keyboard adapter I bought a while back decided to stop working today. At least I already had the AR codes already typed in and saved.
Perhaps more can be done with the Wii, who knows? |

Something like this root=/dev/nfs nfsroot=192.168.1.4:/mnt/gamecube,v3,tcp is what I used without a problem. I also had a cross-over cable from my pc to my GameCube. I never did much with it since I quickly moved on to my Dreamcast when my BBA for that came. |

Heh, the gc readme didn't have specifics about what versions of what protocols.
Hmm...I only used standard nfsv3/UDP since that seems to be the most "basic" nfs setup since 1999 or so... are you sure the 'cube's nfs was using TCP ?
Perhaps a problem might have been that I was running through the switch on a linksys router. As I recall the BC broadband adapter is 10base only? Could have been issues with the HTPC nic running 100 although that shouldn't be an issue...
I guess I should try to find whatever forums/mailing lists are available for gc linux... |

Just a note for all/any of you PAL Wii owners out there. The Action Replay (and Freeloader) discs up to and including v1.0b are confirmed as NON-WORKING on the Wii, meaning that GC homebrew and such are completely unusable as the AR discs will not boot. Datel *claim* there is a new version but according to the website it's still 1.06b and there is no confirmation it'll work with homebrew/SD apps.
Seemed worth mentioning for future reference.
(Nintendo used the firmware from Pearl White Gamecubes which had anti mod junk in them sadly. This not only - unintentionally - broke the AR support but also the official SD adapter.) |
