My Disc's are the following:

Action Replay Max version 1.14A

Max Drive Pro version 1.1 - USA

I boot into action replay first, goto freeloader, then eject action replay disc and put in Max Drive Pro disc. From the Max Drive Pro menu I can run any .dol file off my MaxDrive in the GC memory card slot.

This is still working, on the latest Wii (NTSC) firmware update as of today.

So is homebrew on the GameCube half of the Wii possible? With a softmod?

Datel no longer makes/sells the Max Drive Pro and I have not been able to locate one at a store that sells used accessories. They do however still make the SD Media Launcher, which can be used to softmod a GameCube too in much the same way as the Max Drive. So I want to know if it is possible to do this on the Wii.

EDIT: Also, do we know yet how the Wii handles GameCube exactly, and how it knows when a disc is GameCube or Wii disc? Is it detecting whether it is 8cm/12cm or is it actually detecting through some other means? I really hope it's detecting it through firmware or something other than physically, because then I would wonder about doing some sort of double-trick.

Yes.

The SD Media Launcher is marked for and works on the Wii. I wish it had been out earlier, as I would've gotten one of those instead of the Action Replay and Gecko adapter, which I still haven't gotten running.

It's firmware based, IIRC, you can use Action Replay's Freeloader to boot homebrew off a regular sized DVD. Also IIRC, you can't access the full disc unless you have a mod chip installed, only what's in the 8cm area.
