From what I've seen in the wiki there's no info about the battery status. I'm still wiiless but from what I've seen the games alert you to change the Wii Remote's batterys. There should be some Report ID that shows it.

I threw out an advance warning to buy some rechargeables but that may not be needed that frequently. I probably only have about 20 hours play on my Wii but the onscreen battery indicator still shows them as full. I'll wait until they are down a bar before repurposing them for something 'less critical' (as though playing a game is critical).
