|
|
Let's start a fresh discussion on what WiiLi Link is:
WiiLi Link is:
*A Live Linux distro that runs on a regular PC.
*Uses the Wiimote (as soon as drivers become available).
*It's adapted to lower screen resolutions (think your TV)
*Is got all the required packages to support the features requested on our Wiki.
You can create your own version WiiLi Link by remastering any Live Linux CD like Knoppix, Slax, etc...
* Adapting the GUI to make sure it will look OK on a regular TV, and using the current Wii GUI style.
*Making it easy to use with the Wiimote.
* Including the wiimote drivers when they become available.
* Using the icons, wallpapers and other media available and the Wiki.
Why do we need this?
To make development of WiiLi faster.
Once the kernel is ready, we will base on WiiLi Link for the final WiiLi that will boot on the Nintendo Wii.
WiiLi Link will provide the looks of the final WiiLi. |

Thanks for putting things into perspective and breaking it down into reasonable steps |

Couple questions to bounce.
Just to clarify: There are still no linux drivers for the wiimote yet, yes? What if there never are? Would it be okay to just go ahead with the use of hacks like WMD?
Is Wiili Link even necessary? Can't you just instruct everyone to use the same live cd distro that is well-suited to the task? I guess I don't understand why a custom live cd is required for a testing grounds especially since it's not even planed for the same architecture. Maybe if things were made more clear...
Maybe I'm just being thick. |

There still isn't a proper kernel driver, but it shouldn't be too long. If a Python script works, why would it not being a driver really matter?

Do you know of any Live CDs that optimised for TV output and using the Wiimote? All the Live CDs I know of are designed for VGA+, with exception of Movix which is only for watching video. I don't know of any with icon and layout conducive to being pointed at with a remote.
Heck, the only standard def optimised UI that I know of is MythTV.
I believe the Live CD idea is mainly to test out the UI. It also gives people something to play with until WiiLi is released. As for helping devs, it'd give them something to play with uCLib and other low-resource applications and libraries and how there programs interact with them. With 88MB of RAM something on the order of DSL is needed, not a full-resource Linux distro. |
